Is the Bible Truly Reliable? A Deep Dive into Orthodox Doctrine and Tradition
The Divine Inspiration and Authority of Scripture
The Orthodox Church affirms that the Bible is not merely a collection of ancient writings but the very Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit. This belief is rooted in the teachings of the Ecumenical Councils, which declare that the Scriptures are unbreakable and unshakable. As stated in Canon 1 of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, the divine testimonies are to be kept forever, and any addition or subtraction from them is forbidden, echoing Moses' words: 'to these, it is not appropriate to add, and from these, it is not appropriate to take away.' The Apostle Paul also warns that if anyone preaches differently, even an angel from heaven, they are to be accursed (Galatians 1:8). This underscores the Church’s commitment to preserving the purity and integrity of Scripture.
The Role of Tradition and the Church Fathers
The Church Fathers and ecumenical councils have played a crucial role in safeguarding the correct interpretation and transmission of Scripture. Canon 19 of the Sixth Ecumenical Council emphasizes that Scripture should be taught according to the interpretations of the God-bearing Fathers, not personal opinions. This tradition ensures that the faithful are grounded in the true understanding of God's Word, preventing deviation and error. The writings of Athanasius the Great further affirm that the canonical books are the sole sources of salvation, warning against apocryphal texts that can mislead believers. His enumeration of the Old and New Testament books reflects the Church’s careful discernment in recognizing authentic divine revelation.
The Canonical Books and Their Divine Authority
The Church’s canon, established through careful discernment and divine guidance, includes 22 books of the Old Testament and the recognized books of the New Testament, such as the four Gospels, Acts, and the Epistles of the Apostles. These books are considered inspired and authoritative because they were handed down by eyewitnesses and servants of the Logos. The Church Fathers stress that no additions or deletions should be made to this canon, as it contains the full divine revelation necessary for salvation and spiritual growth. This canon forms the foundation of Orthodox faith and practice, ensuring that believers have a reliable guide in their spiritual journey.
Trusting in the Living Tradition
Beyond the written text, the Church also recognizes the importance of unwritten traditions that complement and illuminate Scripture. Canon 92 of Saint Basil the Great highlights that many mysteries are conveyed through unwritten traditions, which are rooted in Apostolic teaching and long-standing practice. These traditions, alongside Scripture, form a living tradition that guides the Church in faith and worship. The Church’s reverence for this tradition reflects its trust in the Holy Spirit’s ongoing work in guiding the community of believers.
Conclusion: The Unshakable Foundation of Faith
The reliability of the Bible is affirmed through divine inspiration, the authoritative teaching of the Church Fathers, and the sacred tradition upheld by ecumenical councils. Believers are encouraged to trust in this divine foundation, knowing that Scripture and tradition together form an unshakable bulwark of truth. As Jesus Himself warned, error arises from ignorance of the Scriptures and the power of God (Matthew 22:29). Therefore, let us embrace the Word of God with reverence and confidence, drawing nourishment and guidance from its divine wisdom.
